A Look At Our History The Baker Hunt Foundation was named in honor of our benefactress Margaretta Baker Hunt. Margaretta was born on June 25, 1845 in Cincinnati, Ohio to John Baker and Henrietta Adams Baker. In the summer of 1854, the Baker family moved to Covington and purchased a large home at 620 Greenup Street.
On April 30, 1872, Margaretta married Dr. William Hunt of Covington in the Trinity Episcopal Church. The couple had one child, a daughter, Katie. Katie died of spinal meningitis on her 15th birthday. Dr. Hunt died within the same year, on May 20, 1893, leaving Margaretta a widow. She continued to live at 620 Greenup Street. Her beloved niece, Kate Scudder, lived nearby and became her closest companion. Miss Scudder's home, at 604 Greenup, later became the home of the Covington Art Club.
In spring of 1922, Margaretta set up the Baker Hunt Foundation. The main work of the foundation was to promote the study of art, education, and science and to promote the good works of religion in Covington. The Hunt home became a gathering place for many societies and associations in Covington. The cornerstone of the Covington Natural History Museum (known now as the Auditorium and Studio) was laid on June 29, 1929.
Present Day and Future The present day Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center campus includes the Baker Hunt Mansion and Family Museum, the Kate Scudder House and the Auditorium and Studio. We offer a wide variety of learning experiences for adults and children ranging in age from 5-105+, with skill levels including beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Classes run from 6 weeks - 12 weeks, depending on the session. Baker Hunt serves over 1500 tristate area students annually and has no waiting list for classes, as there had been in the past.
